Welcome to the course! I was so impressed with the active participation today. Let's keep it up and hear some new voices next week!
For homework:
You've been given the task of curating an exhibition on US culture for a non-US audience. What 5-10 items would you choose to display that would be metonymic of US culture? Why? Once you've made your list compare your choices with those of the Smithsonian (the national network of museums in Washington D.C.) for their "101 objects that made America." https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/101-objects-that-made-america-2254692/ Is their set complete in your opinion?
Bring your answers to the questions above next week.
Competition:
Occasionally, I'll be posting trivia questions for prizes. This week's question is the following:
In front of the university building at Claudiusstr. 1 there are names carved into the stone entryway. Who among the names was from the States? Why does his/her name appear there or why was it included in the group? (Make sure your answer to this second question is thorough.)
The first five students to send me an email with the correct answers will win a prize in class. (The catch: you must be in class to collect it next week, otherwise it goes to a runner-up :).)
