Kulturraumstudien USA, Homework for December 18th

For homework, please find a feminist/womanist text from the US, listen/read/watch it, and be able to define in our next session what makes this work a feminist/womanist text. 

(Example: "A Room of One's Own" is considered a classic feminist text by British/English writer Virgnia Woolf. We see echoes of her work (i.e. intertextuality) in Beyoncé's Super Bowl performance (slide 23 in the December 11 slides) when Beyoncé sings "best revenge is your paper," referring to cash. (Woolf writes, "That is why I have laid so much stress on money and a room of one's own.") Music videos, individual performances, song lyrics, ad campaigns, political cartoons, and photographs are examples of texts you might have a look at for this assignment.)

Bring any questions you have regarding the vocabulary/these solutions with you to our next session.


- review Units 1 and 3 and bring in any questions you might have. I would recommend doing exercises from the reviews on pp. 20-21, pp. 36-37 and pp. 265-266 from your book for extra practice. Kulturraumstudien USA, Homework for December 4th

For homework, please: 

- read pp. 5-8 (starting with "Photographs furnish evidence" and ending with "...so the reaction against these uses reinforced the self-consciousness of photography-as-art.") of On Photography featured in the "Sontag On Photograph" folder on ILU. Sontag's language can be difficult, so take your time with her sentences and bring in any questions you might have to our next session.

Take notes as you watch the videos and bring in some of the most interesting findings to our next class session.

- In On Photography, Susan Sontag writes, "From its start, photography implied the capture of the largest possible number of subjects. Painting never had so imperial a scope. The subsequent industrialization of camera technology only carried out a promise inherent in photography from its very beginning: to democratize all experiences by translating them into images" (pg. 7). Select 3-5 US photographs taken between 1890 and 1950 and consider whether this quote applies to them. Bring your findings with you to class. (There are two links below which might help you in finding images.)
