Kompetenzerweiterung III, Wednesday Group, Homework for October 17th

For homework, please visit the following website:
And select two of the 5-minute debates to assess and analyze in the following five domains (those discussed in our first session):
1) vocabulary/word choice
2) syntax/grammar
3) thesis (main point)
4) illustrative examples/detail/data
5) pronunciation/fluency
(Just because they're native speakers, doesn't mean you cannot assess them on all of these levels!)
In your assessment, make sure to cite specific detail in each of the areas (don't write, "overall good"). In each debate, make a final judgement concerning who you feel was stronger of the two.

The exam will be as follows:

Partners will sign up for a 45-minute exam appointment in December. There are two parts to the exam:

Part One: individual presentations
Each of you will receive an infographic you have never seen before on which you will base a 5-minute presentation. Both of you will have 15 minutes to prepare and 5 minutes to present. The topics will be completely unrelated. No dictionaries are allowed, but you can talk to each other during the prep time. I will be present during the prep time.

Part Two: debates
You will then have two 5-minute debates with your partner, one prepared and one spontaneous. You will need to inform me of your prepared debate question in advance, ideally when you register for your exam time slot. You should do some research in advance about your topic and stance for the prepared debate, but I don't want a prepared script or to see that you've memorized your lines.

The second debate will be entirely spontaneous, but drawing from topic areas we've covered in class.

There is no prep time for either of the debates. In the remaining minutes of the exam, you will receive your grade and immediate feedback on your performance.

Kompetenzerweiterung I, Tuesday/Thursday Class, Homework for October 11th

**If you do not take class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, this post is not for you!**

For homework, please:

1) Get your journal! We will be using journals all year long, so it might behoove you to invest in a thicker notebook/journal in order to track your progress across the entire year (you are of course welcome to use multiple journals).
2) Read the following on participle clauses here: https://www.grammaring.com/participle-clauses

3) And complete exercise "Practice 1" on this page: https://www.grammar-quizzes.com/passive3c.html

4) Have a look at this video in preparation of an article we'll read on Thursday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4jibdbwKm4

5) By Tuesday, October 16th, you should have written a 250-word essay in your journal in response to one of the following prompts:
a) What's the best sense? <--- (This topic will be discussed in Thursday's class.)
b) A response to one of the questions from the Proust questionnaire

6) Order the textbook! Title and ISBN: Destination C1 & C2 Grammar and Vocabulary with key, 978-0-230-03540-9 You will need this text by next Tuesday.

Bring all handouts with you to class on Thursday. Please get into the habit of keeping handouts in a folder/binder which you bring with you with your textbook to each class.

Note concerning the journals: Journals only need to be brought to class on journal collection days. The first journal collection day for the Tuesday/Thursday group (i.e. you J ) will be Thursday, October 25th. Make sure that you are present in class or give your journal to a classmate to submit for you. I do not accept late submissions and will not read submissions you write outside of deadlines (meaning, if you miss the deadline of October 25th but submit on time two weeks later, I will not read entries from the beginning of October.)

Kulturraumstudien USA, Homework for October 15th

Welcome to the course! I was so impressed with the active participation today. Let's keep it up and hear some new voices next week!

For homework:

You've been given the task of curating an exhibition on US culture for a non-US audience. What 5-10 items would you choose to display that would be metonymic of US culture? Why? Once you've made your list compare your choices with those of the Smithsonian (the national network of museums in Washington D.C.) for their "101 objects that made America." https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/101-objects-that-made-america-2254692/ Is their set complete in your opinion?

Bring your answers to the questions above next week.

Competition:
Occasionally, I'll be posting trivia questions for prizes. This week's question is the following:
In front of the university building at Claudiusstr. 1 there are names carved into the stone entryway. Who among the names was from the States? Why does his/her name appear there or why was it included in the group? (Make sure your answer to this second question is thorough.)
The first five students to send me an email with the correct answers will win a prize in class. (The catch: you must be in class to collect it next week, otherwise it goes to a runner-up :).)

Kompetenzerweiterung I, Monday/Wednesday Group, Homework for Wed., October 10th

**If you do not take class on Mondays and Wednesdays, this post is not for you!**

For homework, please:

2) Once you have your journal, please write 10 sentences using 10 vocabulary words you've learned from the "What's the best sense?" texts. The idea is that you are utilizing words you would like to add to your active vocabulary and are "trying them out" to make sure that you are using them in the right contexts.
