Kulturraumbezogene Wirtschaftsthemen, Homework for April 5th

 For homework, please: 

- submit your Teilleistung consent form (available in the "class information" folder on Ilias), if you haven't already.

- continue working on your first Teilleistung with your partner. 

- complete all of the exercises and readings in the CSR folder on Ilias.

- watch the following TED Talk and take notes concerning how the speaker defends his thesis, "Businesses exist to serve a purpose...and only by doing so will they generate profits in the long run." The social responsibility of business | Alex Edmans | TEDxLondonBusinessSchool - YouTube After considering his arguments, answer the following question: are there any blindspots in Edmans' arguments (i.e. areas/factors he didn't consider)?

Optional: Alex Edmans' TED Talk focuses in part on the company COSTCO. This video interestingly outlines COSTCO's business model (and, by the way, this YouTube channel is a great one to follow): Behind Costco's Treasure-Hunt Shopping Strategy | WSJ - YouTube

Optional essay: investigate the CSR policies of one of your favorite companies. In an essay of 250-350 words, identify where the company is doing well (be specific and use examples) and where it has room for improvement, in your opinion. If you choose to complete this assignment, it must be sent to me via email in a .docx file (so that I can edit it and add comments) no later than Friday, April 1st at 5 pm.

 For homework, please: 

1. make sure to fill out and sign the Teilleistung agreement (located in the "Class information" file on Ilias) and to send it to me via email by the deadline. 

2. read Unit 11 of Destination and complete exercises A-J (pp. 88-91). 

3. read Unit 10 of Destination and complete exercises A-O (pp. 78-83).  

4. have a look at this video, which is a nice, quick review of conditionals: A review of conditionals: BBC English Class - YouTube ...and this one for for mixed conditionals: Grammar: Mixing conditionals - BBC English Masterclass - YouTube

(The BBC Learning English channel is an excellent YouTube channel to subscribe to.There are videos there for all levels of English learning.)

5. make sure that you have met with your partner in the week of March 28th-April 1st. Send them the reading and listening links at least 48 hours in advance. Complete a log entry for this session.

The essay prompt for your optional essay assignment this week is: Is gossip always bad?
Submit your essay of 250-350 words to me at my email address in a .docx file by Thursday, March 31st at midnight. Essays submitted after this deadline will be deleted and/or that exceed the word limit will not be corrected.

Kulturraumstudien USA, Homework for April 4th

Continuing with the theme of censored literature, do your own research to identify five texts that have been censored or banned from public presentation and/or school curricula over time in the US. (Texts can be any curated content including music, museum exhibitions, films, books, photography, etc.) Consider the following question: how is this reconcilable with First Amendment rights?

In addition, have a look at Woodrow Wilson's 14 Points on this page: The Fourteen Points | National WWI Museum and Memorial (theworldwar.org). What relevance do these points have for today's geopolitical landscape?

Kulturraumbezogene Wirtschaftsthemen, Homework for Week One (March 22-25)

 For our next group session, please complete the following:

- fill out, sign, and send the Teilleistung consent form (available under "Class information" on Ilias) to me via email by April 12th

- get started with your partner on the first Teilleistung (more information under "Class information")

- complete the reading comprehension and listening comprehension activity featured in the "Trade" folder on Ilias (note that one of the readings features an optional essay assignment; if you choose to complete this assignment, it must be sent to me via email no later than March 25th by 5 pm). In addition, read the vocab pages in the "vocab: globalization and economic policy folder" and complete exercises 2.2, 2.3, and 2.5. Self-check your answers using the answer key. Bring your notes to all of these exercises and any questions you might have with you to our next Zoom session on March 29th from 14-15:30.

- have a look at last semester's exam ("Kulturraumsbezogene Wirtschaftsthemen Exam WiSe 2021 22" on Ilias) and bring in any questions you might have to our next session on March 29th from 14-15:30. 

- consider the following question: why does war drive inflation? We will be discussing this question in our next session on March 29th. (Please note that there is NO Zoom session on March 24th from 14-15:30. I encourage you to meet with your partner during that time slot to discuss the details of your first Teilleistung/to use that time slot to complete the aforementioned assignments.)

3. read Unit 9 in Destination (pp. 70-71) and complete all of the accompanying exercises (A-J). Bring any questions you have to our next class Zoom session on Thursday, March 24rd from 11:30-13:00. 

4. make sure that you have met with your partner by the end of this week. Your first log entry should record 1) when you met (i.e. specific times), 2) notes concerning what was discussed, and 3) notes concerning your goals/objectives for your five future meetings. 

Your optional essay assignment for this week is as follows: find an advice column letter/agony aunt letter from the web and write a response to it that directly opposes the advice provided in the publication. Include the advice from the columnist in your submission. Your response should not exceed 350 words. Submit this to me via email by Thursday, March 24th at midnight. Late submissions/submissions that exceed the word limit will NOT be read.

Kulturraumstudien USA, Homework for March 28th

Welcome back!

For homework, please:

1) have a look at least one of the analysis videos featured on this site: The Take - YouTube Please watch a video that one could potentially build a research question and project around (the video on dark academia, for example, is excellent) and bring your notes from/ideas connected to the video with you to our next session.

2) have a look at last semester's exam on Ilias (it's the file "Kulturraumstudien USA Exam WiSe 2021 22 as PDF") and bring in any questions you might have about it or the exam procedure to our next session.

3) we're supposed to have beautiful weather all week long, so I encourage you to visit the memorial to the authors whose books were burned in front of the TH's main building at Claudiusstr. 1. Identify 1) all of the US authors included and 2) consider why their work was deemed offensive by German National Socialists. The student who sends me the most complete answer to these two questions via email by Friday, March 25th at 5 pm will win a prize.
