1853: Commodore Perry “opens trade” with Japan; 1854: Treaty of Kanagawa

•       1894-95: Sino-Japanese War

•       1904: Japan defeats Russia in Manchuria

•       1910: Japanese annexation of Korea

•       1914: Japan becomes ally of Britain in WWI

•       1923: British Empire ends alliance with Japan

•       Late 1920s: nationalism and scepticism towards West amid economic depression

•       1931: Japanese invasion of Manchuria

•       1936: Japan becomes allies of Nazi Germany

•       1937: Japanese war with China

•       1940: Japanese occupation of French Indo-China
