Kulturraumstudien USA, Homework for June 28th

For homework, please read pp. 751 (at the bottom starting from "As a boy...") - 757 (ending right before "In December 2010...") from These Truths and answer the following questions:

1. On pg. 752, Lepore states, "Not since Woodrow Wilson had Americans elected a scholar as president." Why is this significant? How do you think Lepore defines "scholar"?

2. What is affirmative action? (This will most likely require some outside research.)

3. On pg. 754, Lepore states that Obama's candidacy "changed the nature of campaigning." How did it manage to do this?

4. On the same page, Lepore claims that Obama "was no FDR." How do the two presidents differ?

5. What is the Tea Party? (Extension question: what aspects of their platform did Trump draw upon in his campaign?)

The slides from the June 21st session are posted under the title "Late 60s, US War in Vietnam, AIDS crisis".
