Kulturraumstudien USA, Homework for June 14th

For homework, please read pp. 522 (start with "Hiroshima marked the beginning...")-529 (stop at "The Happiest Place on Earth") of These Truths and answer the following questions:

1. Why was Japan's surrender met with a mixed reaction by the US public, according to Lepore?

2. On pg. 525, Lepore proposes the following thesis: "Computers are often left out of the study of history and government, but, starting at the end of the Second World War, history and government cannot be understood without them." Do you agree with her? How might taking computing into account be essential to understanding our current times?

3. On pg. 526, "Kiwanis clubs" are referenced. What are they and what other organizations are similar? (This will require outside research.)

4. What kind of "new form of conservatism" emerged after WWII?

5. What is the G.I. Bill and how is it a product of its times?

Bonus question for next week: who coined the term "military-industrial complex," when was it coined, and what does it refer to?

The slides from June 7th are under the file name "The Great Depression and WWII" on Ilias.
