Kompetenzerweiterung I, Tuesday/Thursday Group, Homework for October 16th

**If you do not take class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, this post is not for you!**

For homework, please:

1) Get your journal! if you haven't already! We will be using journals all year long, so it might behoove you to invest in a thicker notebook/journal in order to track your progress across the entire year (you are of course welcome to use multiple journals).

2) In your journal, please write 10 sentences using vocabulary you've gleaned (<-- hey, look this guy up!) from the word formation exercise and Economist passport article today.

3) Read the second and third responses what's the "best sense". Identify 5 sentences in the second response with "-ly" adverbs and see if the adverb can be placed in a different part of the sentence and remain grammatically correct. Look up all of the words you don't know in the third response.
4) Have a look at the following video on waste management in San Francisco: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDMgMvcCm6w
In what ways is the city leading in waste management?

5) Read the "Cash for trash" article from the Economist passed out today in class. What is the Economist's opinion on how the world should manage waste?

6) Two more essay prompts you can write 250-word essays in your journals on include the following:
a) Should countries sell citizenship?
b) Should styrofoam be banned for the sake of the environment?

You should aim to write one essay in your journal per week.

7) Check out this online collocations dictionary and bring ten collocations you found with you to class on Monday (begin by typing any English word in the search field): http://www.freecollocation.com/

8) Order the textbook! Title and ISBN: Destination C1 & C2 Grammar and Vocabulary with key, 978-0-230-03540-9 You will need this text by next Tuesday. (As mentioned in class, don't worry if your order doesn't come in time, just do your best :). )

Bring all handouts and the textbook with you to class on Tuesday. Please get into the habit of keeping handouts in a folder/binder which you bring with you with your textbook to each class.
